About Nutrition & Food Sciences

Learn about nutrition and the research, development, packaging, and distribution of our food supply. At LSU, you will participate in hands-on learning, professional development, and faculty-led research to prepare for a health-related profession or career in business or agriculture.

Concentrations Available:

  • Dietetics - Gain a broad knowledge base and specialized skills in human nutrition, food, and food systems management. A student who completes our dietetics concentration can apply for a dietetic internship with the ultimate goal of obtaining professional credentials in dietetics. Some of these required courses are human physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, nutrition and disease, food science, and cultural foods.   
  • Food Science and Technology - Learn what makes food appetizing and safe and how it gets to consumers. Students learn all aspects of food production, from development to packaging and distribution. They study safety, taste, acceptability, quality, and nutrition. Students learn food chemistry, analysis, microbiology, engineering, and business. Graduates are prepared for careers in quality assurance, research and development, manufacturing, and regulatory compliance. 
  • Food Science and Technology w/Pre-Med Option: There is a strong relationship between food science, nutrition and the health field in prevention of disease, slowing aging and finding solutions to problems like inflammation, cancer, and obesity such as development of nutritional or medical foods. Students aspiring to go to medical school can take the Pre-Medicine option which allows students to take core courses required for consideration for admission to medical school.
  • Nutrition, Health, and Society - Examine the links between food, nutrition, and society. The concentration provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary for careers in the health professions, including nutrition, nutrition education, the food industry, and government or scientific writing. 
  • Nutritional Sciences - Pre-Medicine - Understanding the critical role that food and nutrition play in reducing the risk of chronic and acute diseases. Nutritional science provides premedical students with a solid basis for building meaningful medical careers. This concentration prepares students for careers in the food or healthcare industries, education, or government and meets the requirements for application to medical and dental school.

Program Requirements

Once you're an LSU student, you'll need to meet the requirements below to continue pursuing this major.

  • 2.0 GPA in all coursework (2.5 GPA for transfer)
  • 2.0 cumulative GPA in courses toward degree requirements
  • grade of "C" or better in ENGL 1001 and MATH 1021 or higher
