Love Purple Live Gold Awards

The Agent of Change award is presented to a student who best demonstrates strong leadership skills while generating campus wide awareness on existing social issues. The student chosen for this award advocates for change through programs or service opportunities that educate and engage the LSU community.

This year’s recipient created a program that helped first-year students and upper-level students meet in a socially distanced manner known as the Pandemic Peers program. Through the Alpha Epsilon Delta and Science Residential College partnership, first-year students who aspire to attend medical school have a chance to speak with upper-level students who have similar goals. As president of Alpha Epsilon Delta, this student worked hard to bring safe in-person opportunities to students in the Science Residential College and throughout LSU’s campus.

The Emerging Leader Award is presented to a first-year student who demonstrates an interest in enhancing personal leadership skills. This student participates in leadership programs and takes on active roles in student organizations. The student selected for this award has exhibited a commitment to LSU and the surrounding community while demonstrating an ability to follow through with commitments.

Our award recipient is described as a natural-born leader. In this student’s involvement with Student Government’s Freshman Leadership Council, he developed an initiative to establish a mental health walk to educate students on the mental health resources available and spread positivity on campus.

The Legacy Award is presented to a senior who is engaged within the campus community and has made a long-term commitment to enhance the quality of students’ lives at LSU for future generations. The student selected for this award has demonstrated a history of holding progressively responsible leadership positions as well as impacted more than one area of the university community, demonstrated the ability to recognize a need and affect positive change, collaborated with other students, and served as a role model for other students.

Over the last two years, our award recipient has fostered a culture of collegiality and respect among his branch of Student Government members.  This student also led a review of Student Government’s Constitution and governing bylaws, helping them create a system that will allow a more productive and effective Student Government to exist for years to come.

The Unsung Hero award is given to a member of a student organization who doesn’t hold an executive role but goes above and beyond the call of duty. The student selected for this award is a role model who has made a positive impact on the entire organization.

The nominator described this recipient with the following statement:
This student has remained a committed member of LSU Ambassadors, Student Government, and Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority since her freshman year, constantly working behind the scenes to ensure the success of each of these organizations. She brings flavor and passion to each of her roles, and members of each of these organizations have spoken very highly of her work ethic.

Louisiana State University is an interactive community in which students, faculty, and staff together strive to pursue truth, advance learning, and uphold the highest standards of performance in an academic and social environment. From accepting responsibility for our actions to holding ourselves accountable and practicing justice and compassion in human relations, these tenants remind us of what community really about – uplifting each other. We display the Commitment to Community at many events as a reminder of what this community stands for.

This year’s recipient proudly adheres to contributing positively to the life of campus and the surrounding community. Although the organization is dedicated to aiding members in the pursuit of their medical school aspirations, Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) is first and foremost a service organization. This organization contributes positively to LSU and the Baton Rouge community through community service. Members of Alpha Epsilon Delta volunteer at events ranging from Habitat for Humanity every Saturday to Life Share blood drive twice per year, as well as host teams for Geaux BIG Baton Rouge and Dance Marathon here on campus. Members also raise money and supplies for organizations, such as Volunteers of America of Greater Baton Rouge for Hurricane Laura relief efforts and Camp Kesem for children whose parents have been diagnosed with cancer. AED has also partnered with the Cystic Fibrosis and the Science Residential College to mentor freshmen interested in pursuing a career in the medical professions through the Pandemic Peers program. AED prides itself in holding its members to the highest standards of academic, personal, and social integrity.

The Academic/Educational Award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on a specific discipline or topic that furthers knowledge in that area and encourages dialogue and learning among the attendees. 

When asked what made their program outstanding, the nominator stated that they shared the goal of raising awareness of the issues students with disabilities face daily on campus. This organization wanted to make sure students felt heard by the LSU administration and comfortable enough to share their stories and experiences. Disability Awareness Week was created with those goals in mind. To accommodate everyone, they planned a mix of virtual and in-person events. They developed a 5-day event filled with demos, panels, and outdoor activities to celebrate students with disabilities and learn new ways to support them.

The Advocacy Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program that exemplifies dedication towards the welfare of a cause, global topic, or existing social issue. The program selected for this award will have engaged students through creating awareness, providing solutions, and promoting social change.

When asked about their program, the organization wanted to show the administration that students were tired of their voices being covered up. The leaders of the event made sure to make support available for the survivors in attendance as well as educational programs for those who did not know about sexual assault.

The Collaborative Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program implemented through collaboration with another student organization or university department.

This winning collaborative program was launched as a 12-hour live streaming fundraiser to raise support for the LSU Student Emergency Support Fund. It provided live entertainment from students and faculty to encourage members of the LSU community to give. Throughout the event, they showed clips of the importance of the fund. They also provided periodic updates on reaching the monetary goal to actively engage the audience. The overall goal of this event was to raise $5,000, and they raised over $6,000 in 12 hours. Student Government was responsible for the production of the live entertainment, Student Philanthropy Council was responsible for the philanthropic aspect and marketing strategy, and TigerTV was responsible for the day-of production and streaming of the event.

The Multicultural/Diversity Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program aiming to build positive interactions among different cultures and promotes awareness of cultural and global issues.

The goal of their program was to highlight and celebrate the many important roles diversity plays on our campus. The week included programs such as Diversity Panels on their social media with students from minority communities sharing their experiences on campus. Students were able to ask questions like “What does it mean to be an LGBTQ+ lawyer?” and “What does it mean to be a Native American medical professional?” They also held Hear Her Voice and Seaux Live as part of the week’s events.

The Service/Volunteer Program Award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on community service and volunteerism.

The organization had this to say about their program: In the aftermath of Hurricane Laura, many students from the Gulf Coast Region were left displaced due to the hurricane’s damage on southwest Louisiana. Student Government quickly put together a food and clothing drive to support the Lake Charles, Louisiana, community in their time of need. In just a few days, they partnered with a local non-profit, the BRidge Agency, Inc., and put together over 50 pounds of material to be sent to the Lake Charles community. SG brought the donations to Lake Charles and spent a weekend helping clean up the debris.

The Social Program award is presented to the organization with the best program focused on enhancing student involvement through broad based campus programs, allowing students to meet new people while having fun in an alcohol and drug free environment.

The Social program of the year focused on self-love, poetry, confidence boosting activities and feeling happy with the person you are. This program was designed to help women of color feel that being a minority woman is a privilege rather than a struggle.

Advisors are mentors who develop leaders. They are team builders who foster relationships among a group of strangers. They provide guidance and support while encouraging the group to achieve goals, but most importantly, Advisors volunteer their time to an organization outside of their regular day-to-day responsibilities.  

Advisor of the Year is typically nominated by the student organization they serve. This year is no different. The nominator said the following: Whenever we ask her for advice on a big decision, she always helps us to see all sides of the issue and come to an informed decision. She is willing to answer any question without judgment. Many students, including myself, often seek her guidance for organization-related decisions, but her wisdom extends to academics as well as personal advice.

The Graduate Student Leader of the Year Award is presented to a graduate student who has made a significant contribution to the quality of life at LSU.

As the president of the Graduate Student Association, this person initiated numerous attempts to improve the life of graduate students at LSU, including diversifying healthcare options, offering enhanced transparency to grad student fees, improving communication between the Graduate School and its students, and boosting participation of graduate students in Student Government. This student helped create an organization called The Speakers' Forum, which promotes the success stories of graduate faculty and students alike with purpose to inspire current students and attract prospective students to LSU. Creating this organization was partly a response to the Graduate School's request to better advertise the accomplishment of its members. He also collaborated with student leaders across campus, where he helped organized a successful Zoom health insurance townhall in the fall of 2020 with the International Student Association.

The New Student Organization of the Year Award is presented to a registered student organization that was created between January 2019 and December of 2020.  

The organization selected for this award has demonstrated their commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academics, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service and collaboration. 

The nominator stated that the purpose of this new organization is to educate students on the value and impact of philanthropy at LSU. Their main philanthropic fund is the Student Emergency Support Fund because it impacts the entire student body. The experiences and lessons that are being gained from being a member of this organization translate into professional development after graduation. This organization actively works to create a sense of responsibility to the LSU community. Everything this organization does is for the students of LSU, and members are proud to be a part of the organization.

Student Organization of the Year is presented to the student organization that has demonstrated continuous commitment to the mission of the organization as well as academic excellence, leadership development, student involvement, diversity, service, and collaboration. 

Founded in 2017, the main goal of this organization is to help Bangladeshi students represent Bangladeshi heritage and culture at LSU. The organization host traditional holiday events and community service events. They help the new students find housing and other needs while adjusting in a new environment. They perform in various cultural events held in LSU such as International Fusion. One of the most notable works this year is publishing their first magazine, Sailing Robins, to celebrate the 50th Victory Day of Bangladesh. They also held several virtual events including Acoustic Night and Career Advice after Graduation. They distributed face masks and sanitizers as part of their community service.
