LSU Communication across the Curriculum exists with one primary mission: helping students enhance their communication skills. This includes writing, speaking, visual, and technological communication as well as supporting both specific academic fields and communication skills development that transcends a class or discipline. Located in several physical spaces across campus (Patrick F. Taylor, Coates Hall, Design Building), LSU CxC also offers web-based services to students, faculty, staff and visitors. While team members serve this shared mission, physical and remote work requirements vary by team role. 

Our team members, while specializing in a few modes or areas, are expected to be knowledgeable about the breadth of CxC programming so that they can best represent the program and direct students, faculty and staff to the appropriate support. LSU CxC Studio Team Members are skilled communicators, enthusiastic experimenters, and passionate supporters of their fellow LSU undergraduates. They support other students in developing strong communication skills needed to achieve personal, academic, and professional goals.

LSU CxC prioritizes the health and safety of its team and all those the program serves. This means we commit to clarity regarding physical and remote requirements asked of the team so that all team members (you!) can make an informed decision. Further, we commit to the continuous assessment and evaluation of safety standards, and to keeping the conversation open about every team member’s level of comfort working physically on campus. 

As a program focused on communication, we also rely on effective team communication across projects and locations in order to provide excellent service to the LSU student population. Foundational to effective communication is a commitment to creating inclusive and equitable spaces for students, staff and faculty of all physical and cognitive abilities, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexes, sexualities and genders, countries of origin, religious affiliations and economic status.

Writing Mentors provide one-on-one writing consultation and mentoring services to their fellow LSU students, helping their peers become more effective and independent writers. Writing support focuses on a broad range of discipline-specific content and a variety of writing genres. Writing Mentors are not expected to be experts in a broad range of disciplines at the time of hire but must be enthusiastic about the opportunity to stretch their own knowledge of writing beyond the areas in which they currently excel. Writing mentors serve students across all majors and colleges and work with team members across all CxC Studios. Depending on your additional areas of expertise, you will be assigned a primary studio and supervisor that you report to. 

Regular activities include:

  • Taking both scheduled and walk-in consultations in-person at your assigned studio;
  • Conducting 1-1 writing appointments via video-conferencing software (Zoom);
  • Completing asynchronous  consultations via our asynchronous paper upload and consultation portal;
  • Working with CxC GAs, instructors and staff to find and create educational resources related to writing and other forms of communication;
  • Serving as back-up to other team members who are taking calls or supporting studio visitors;
  • Other duties related to studio services, determined from applicants’ additional skill sets and studio needs. Some examples: equipment consultations, maintenance and/or checkout in physical studio locations, 1-1 oral or visual communication consultations or resource development in other modes of communication.

CxC Client Services Specialists will serve as concierge for studio services and resources, assisting in general studio operation, client interactions, and equipment management. They are often the first and last person a student, faculty or staff member will meet as they inquire about and access CxC resources, which means that Client Services Specialists’ professionalism and communication skills are the keystone to CxC’s success. They need to be equipped with up-to-date knowledge of all CxC studios in order to effectively represent CxC and connect visitors with the appropriate resource or team member.

This position is ideal for an LSU undergraduate who is adaptable, intrinsically motivated, reliable and curious. While we prioritize the Work Study Program (CWSP) and President’s Student Aid Program (PSAP) financial aid awards or scholarships in our hiring, we also welcome applicants who do not have these funding sources. 

Specifically, a Client Services Specialist position entails the following:

  • Execute a consistent schedule for work hours for primarily on-site work. Scheduling is determined between you and your supervisor. 
  • Commit to occasional additional (paid) training sessions or communication skills development events beyond scheduled work hours that are planned in advance and in accordance with on-the-job training and execution of CxC’s mission. 
  • Model exceptional and professional communication skills, providing high-quality customer service to any and all visitors to the studios (physical and/or virtual visits, depending on your specific role), including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, parents, and prospective students. 
  • Explain to students, faculty, staff, visitors and potential students the what and why of CxC as well as the specific resources available at any given time.
  • Triage caller (via phone or video chat) and/or visitor needs and guide them through the online booking system for CxC resources and consultations.
  • Provide consultation activities for callers/visitors to help them troubleshoot a question they have about a tool or resource they are using. 
  • Collect and efficiently relay information and needs from students, faculty, staff, etc. to appropriate team members.
  • Use CxC communication protocols to keep up-to-date on activities, tasks and information.
  • Support effectiveness and efficiency of CxC full-time staff team.
  • Champion CxC as an institutional academic excellence program.
  • Perform general studio maintenance such as opening and closing procedures, set-up and breakdown for specific activities, cleaning in such a manner that upholds extensive health and safety protocols
  • Ensure proper functioning and inventory management of studio equipment, resources, and services
  • Follow proper checkout procedures of studio equipment and healthy and safety etiquette, reporting any issues through appropriate channels

CxC Audio-Video Specialist will provide consultations for fellow LSU students and faculty on audio and video projects and assist in general studio operation including client interaction and equipment management.  

CxC Audio-Video Specialists provide consultations for a wide range of audio and video communication aspects, from storyboarding and voice-overs to selecting the appropriate equipment, editing, and project  development. Audio-Video Specialists are not expected to be experts, but must be enthusiastic about the opportunity to expand their own knowledge to learn all facets of audio and video communication. Audio-Video Specialists will join a collaborative team that supports all majors and colleges, as well as LSU faculty. AV specialists may be asked to write descriptions, cut audio and video clips, or present how-to workshops for classes; hence patience, creativity, flexibility, and curiosity are key characteristics for success in this position. 

Regular activities include:

  • Providing guidance for students, faculty, and staff with audio and video capture, production, and delivery needs;
  • Developing classroom and instructional materials related to audio and video capture and delivery;
  • Refining awareness of appropriate and effective communication methods related to audio and video delivery;
  • Identifying and researching podcast protocols, applications, and strategies;
  • Identifying and researching best practices in video recording, editing, and presentation;
  • Editing content in Audacity, Adobe Audition, Adobe Premiere, or other software;
  • Providing guidance and support with AV recording equipment, including preparing equipment and spaces for use, tracking inventory, and checking equipment in and out;
  • Collecting and efficiently relaying information and needs from students, faculty, and staff to appropriate team members;
  • Using CxC communication protocols to keep up-to-date on activities, tasks and information;
  • Supporting effectiveness and efficiency of CxC full-time staff team;
  • Championing CxC as an institutional academic excellence program;

CxC Visual Communication Specialists will provide consultations and mentoring for LSU students and faculty on visual communication projects and assist in general studio operation including assisting clients at the front desk and equipment checkout and management.

CxC Mentors provide one-on-one consultation and mentoring services to their fellow LSU students, helping their peers become more effective and independent communicators. Visual communication specialists provide consultations for a broad range of visual communication, including discipline-specific content and a variety of genres, from presentation slide decks to posters and graphic design projects. Mentors are not expected to be experts in all disciplines and genres  at the time of hire but must be enthusiastic about the opportunity to stretch their  knowledge beyond the areas in which they currently excel. Visual Communication Mentors will join a collaborative team that supports all majors and colleges, as well as LSU faculty. Visual communication mentors may be asked to create design guides and tip sheets, help clients navigate visual design software, and present how-to workshops for classes; hence patience, creativity, flexibility, and curiosity are key characteristics for success in this position.

  • Developing classroom and instructional materials related to visual design for various genres and disciplines
  • Refining awareness of appropriate and effective communication methods related to visual design instruction and feedback
  • Identifying and researching visual communication best practices,  protocols, methods, and applications
  • Editing and providing guidance for clients editing content in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and other software
  • Collecting and efficiently relaying information and needs from students, faculty, and staff to appropriate team members;
  • Using CxC communication protocols to keep up-to-date on activities, tasks and information;
  • Supporting effectiveness and efficiency of CxC full-time staff team;
  • Championing CxC as an institutional academic excellence program;
  • Serving as back-up to other team members who are taking calls or answering general questions.

Qualifications: 

  • Experience with graphic design, STEM poster design, or other kinds of visual design
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite products and other visual design software, Google Drive, and Basecamp, OR enthusiasm and commitment to learning them (we provide training).

Geaux Communicate Ambassadors will be part of a dynamic student team building awareness of LSU’s investment in undergraduate communication skills development, and helping fellow students understand and identify resources to effectively build those skills while on campus. Candidates for this position should have experience with (or an interest in developing skills in) leadership; community organizing, outreach, and engagement; peer-to-peer networking, interpersonal communication, and public speaking; and/or event management.

Ambassadors will be expected to commit to joining the team for a full academic year (Fall and Spring semesters) and work an average of 35 hours each semester. Participation in a team kick-off retreat at the beginning of each semester is required.

Regular activities include:

  • Coordinating and leading table sits in high-traffic areas of campus
  • Identifying, coordinating, and leading informational sessions for large groups
  • Distributing marketing materials across campus
  • Producing and sharing strategic social media content as needed

Qualifications: 

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a commitment to team collaboration and communication; 
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and in teams to complete sustained projects;
