In Memoriam: Annette McCormick
Annette Marie McCormick, a retired Associate Professor in the Department of English,
died on October 6, 2011, three days before her ninety-second birthday, at Christwood
Retirement Community in Covington, where she had been a resident since 2007.
She was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October 9, 1919. She graduated from
Winchester High School in Winchester, Massachusetts, and received an A.B. degree from
Smith College in 1940, an M.A. degree from the University of Chicago in 1941, and
a Ph.D. from the University of London in 1951. Before coming to LSU, she taught at
Bryn Mawr and the University of Kansas. She was a member of the English Department
at LSU from 1959-1984.
Although her main interest was in nineteenth-century British travel literature, during
her career at LSU she taught a wide range of courses, served on numerous committees,
and for several years held the position of Director of Undergraduate Studies in English.
In addition to her work at LSU, she was a perennial committee member of the English
Composition section of the College Entrance Board at Educational Testing Service in
Princeton, New Jersey.
As well as for her many academic achievements, she will be remembered by members
of the English Department as a dedicated teacher, a congenial colleague, a gracious
hostess, an avid reader, and a very good friend.
