Master of Arts in Teaching Grades 6 - 12

You can teach/earn an income while completing your masters' degree in one year

Program Purpose and Objectives

This program is a rigorous 15 month graduate program leading to a Louisiana teaching certificate in grades 6 – 12 and the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Established in 1990, this program prepares teachers at the graduate level in grades 6 - 12 subjects (biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, French, mathematics, physics, social studies, Spanish).

Students take much of their course work in intimate subject-area cohorts. Upon enrolling in an MAT program, students will apply for a full-time teaching job with provisional licensure (PL3) or choose a traditional student teaching arrangement. You will be teaching full-time (and receiving a salary) during the fall and spring while completing your course work. For assistance in finding a full-time teaching position, students are encouraged to contact the Office of Professional Experiences.

Secondary Grades Fifth Year Program

Students interested in this one-year, graduate-level teacher education program should contact Emily A. Dare, PhD with any questions. Apply through the Graduate School by May 1st. Coursework begins in late May. Applications are welcome after May 1st, but cannot be guaranteed consideration.

Eligible applicants should have:

  • A minimum 3.00 GPA
  • Passing Praxis subject specific exam score

It is recommended that applicants hold a degree or have completed at least 30 hours of course work in the content area they wish to teach.
