Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take pictures?

Still photographs, videotapes and audiotapes are permitted for personal use only and may not be published or used for commercial purposes.  Please see the Photography Sessions page for further information on rates and fees for professional and amateur photography appointments at the LSU Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens.

Can I picnic on the grounds?

Picnicking is not allowed on the LSU Rural Life Museum's grounds nor is it allowed in Windrush Gardens.

Can I bring my dog?

Federal Service Dogs are welcome.  Other pets are not allowed on the LSU Rural Life Museum's grounds or in Windrush Gardens, except for photography sessions if certain conditions are met.  The conditions to bring your dog for a photography session are: your dog must be on a leash at all times, have a separate person who is their handler, only be present for the pictures they are needed for, and all messes must be picked up. Dogs are only allowed for photography appointments scheduled after hours.

Pets are allowed on the Trees and Trails area of the property as long as they are on a leash at all times.  Pet handlers for a photography session may take their dog for a walk along Trees and Trails after their dog is no longer needed for the session.

Is the LSU Rural Life Museum handicap accessible?

The LSU Rural Life Museum welcomes guests with special needs.  The Museum's Exhibit Barn, Gift Shop and the restrooms are fully accessible to handicapped guests.  Our Exhibit Barn includes indoor exhibits that feature many artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.

A wheelchair is available on a first-come, first-served basis at no charge.

Handicapped and senior citizen parking is available close to the Museum's Exhibit Barn.  Half of the historic outbuildings are accessible by wheelchair. Buildings and walkways are authentic to the 18th and 19th century, which may impose certain restrictions on our guests.

Special assistance can be requested at the Admissions Desk.

Are the sunflowers in bloom?

The LSU Rural Life Museum and Windrush Gardens are on the same property as the LSU Botanic Gardens.  The sunflower fields and the wild flowers fields are a part of the Botanic Gardens' section of the property.  Please see the Botanic Gardens Photography page for questions about pictures in the flower fields.  The contact number is (225) 763-3990 extension 2.
