The Advanced Process Analysis System is a powerful tool for use by process and plant engineers to perform comprehensive and in-depth evaluations of economic and environmental analysis projects. In addition to increased profit and improved efficiency of operations, it helps identify pollutants in chemical processes and petroleum refineries and develop innovative, economically viable designs to eliminate their generation. An overview of the system is given in Fig 1.

As shown in Figure 2, the main components of this system are a flowsheeting program, an on-line optimization program, a chemical reactor analysis program, a heat exchanger network design program, and a pollution assessment module. A Windows interface has been used to integrate these programs into one user-friendly application.

Referring to Figure 2, an accurate description of the process is obtained from process flowsheeting and on-line optimization. Then an evaluation of the best types of chemical reactors is performed to modify and improve the process. This is followed by the evaluation of the separation units for reduced wastes and emissions. Then pinch analysis is used to determine the best configuration for the heat exchanger network and determine the minimum utilities needed for the process. The pollution index evaluation is used to identify and minimize emissions. A detailed description of the Advanced Process Analysis System and its components, and how they are used together to control and modify the process to maximize the profit and minimize the wastes and emissions is given by K.S. Telang (M.S. thesis, Louisiana State University, 1998).

Installation

The installation procedure and hardware and system requirements for the Advanced Process Analysis System are given below. The setup program will install the Advanced Process Analysis System and the Help system to your hard disk.   

Hardware and System Requirements

To run the Advanced Process Analysis System, you must have certain hardware and software installed on your computer. The system requirements include: 

  • Any IBM compatible machine with Pentium 133 processor or higher 
  • 16 megabytes available space (minimum) 
  • Any display supported by Windows 7 
  • A mouse or other suitable pointing device 
  • Windows 7 or later, or Windows NT 4.0

Installation Procedure

The Advanced Process Analysis System must be installed under Windows 7 or Windows NT. The procedure to install Advanced Process Analysis System is described as follows:

  • Run AdvSys.exe program under Windows 7 or Windows NT.
  • The default destination directory is C:\ Program Files\Advanced Process Analysis System into which the program and the help file will be copied when the setup program is run. This can be changed in the setup program.
  • The setup program installs GAMS in the gams25 subdirectory of the installation directory. If GAMS is already installed and you would like to use the already installed version of GAMS, remove the check mark next to Gams25 in the installation program.
  • Run the program AdvSys.exe in the Installation directory.

To run the Advanced Process Analysis System, the system requires certain .dll and .ocx files. The installation program copies the required files into the system directory if those files are not available in the system. If older versions of the files exist, then the installation program updates these files. The setup program provides an option to restore the initial .dll and .ocx files in the uninstall procedure. If the destination computer is on a network, the program can be installed only if the user has the permission to install(contact the system administrator).
