Job Description

The Associate Veterinarian is responsible for all aspects of daily clinical, medical, and surgical care of the Zoo’s collection. This position will execute the annual preventative health program, oversee the pathology program, participate in ongoing research, and assist in the teaching of interns, new staff, and students. This position reports to the Senior Director of Animal Health, Conservation and Research, and collaborates frequently with the Hospital and Conservation Program Manager and Senior Veterinary Technician. 

Essential Functions:

Primary Function:

  • Ensure comprehensive day to day medical and surgical care of the collection;
  • Plan, organize, and implement the preventative medicine program of the Zoo collection;
  • Responsible for the oversight and implementation of the veterinary student externship program and Summer Research Internship;
  • Participate in conservation and research projects supported by the Zoo’s conservation program;
  • Participate in veterinary collaboration with outside institutions;
  • Establish, update, and administer the Zoo’s medical and quarantine protocols;
  • Participate in the Animal Recapture Team;
  • Responsible for the approval of chemicals and plants used within the Zoo;
  • Responsible for the parasitology program of the collection;
  • Responsible for the reproductive and contraception program of the collection in collaboration with the Collection and Conservation Managers;
  • Responsible for organizing the veterinary components of incoming and outgoing animal shipments in collaboration with the Collection and Conservation Managers;
  • Oversee implementation of the Employee Health Program and serve as the veterinary liaison to consult on issues of employee health, zoonoses, and public health as they relate to our staff, guests, and the collection;
  • Liaison with the Senior Veterinary Technician to establish and maintain appropriate laboratory techniques and diagnostic capabilities and quality;
  • Oversee the pathology program and liaison with JHU comparative pathology department to provide adequate pathology services to the Zoo;
  • Maintain compliance with the veterinary components of USDA regulation and AZA standards;
  • Promote the mission of The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore;
  • Perform other duties as assigned; and,
  • Adhere to all policies and procedures of the Zoo.

Communication (Internal and External):

  • Lecture on research projects and zoo medicine subjects when requested;
  • Publish articles on research and clinical cases in the field of zoo medicine;
  • Participate in national organizations such as AZA, AAZV, AAV, ARAV, WDA, AAWV and AVMA, which further the goals of zoos, zoo medicine and veterinary medicine;
  • Attend continuing education meetings necessary to fulfill licensure requirements;
  • Communicate with and provide assistance to various governmental bodies dealing with wildlife issues, such as Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and United States Fish and Wildlife; and,
  • Attend required zoo managerial and staff meetings.

Management of Resources (financial, human resources, facilities):

Supervise and manage the Veterinary Externship program and Summer Research Internship program including scheduling, application process, mentorship, and evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications:


DVM, VMD, or equivalent.


  • Internship or residency in zoo medicine preferred;
  • ACZM-boarded or qualified strongly preferred;
  • Minimum of one year experience in zoological medicine required;
  • Valid Maryland veterinary license, DEA license, Maryland controlled substances license and USDA Veterinary Accreditation; and
  • Valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including computer, telephone, radio, and vehicles, hand tools, animal restraint and capture devices, darting equipment, incubators, scales, etc.; and,
  • Various medical machines, tools, and equipment;

Working Conditions:

  • Must have 24 hour on-call availability;
  • Must be able to exert up to 70 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work; must be able to remain on feet for periods of time, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, push, pull, climb, balance;
  • Must be able to travel large areas of the Zoo as needed;
  • Must be able to work outdoors in all seasons;
  • Must be able to work while wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment;
  • Contact with hazardous chemicals, animal related injury and diagnostic radiography and anesthesia equipment; and,
  • Exposure to zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack.
