Thanksgiving Break 2020 - Residence Halls

Residence halls remain open over Thanksgiving break and unnecessary travel is highly discouraged. You will receive a survey link to complete by Noon on Nov. 25, 2020 indicating your Thanksgiving travel and residence hall occupancy plans. Based on your plans, you will do one of the following options:

  1. Return home for the Thanksgiving break and opt to remain home until the spring semester. You will check out of your room, turn in your key, and not have access to it again until we reopen in January. Follow in-hall staff's directions to properly prepare your room, complete a check out appointment, and turn in your key. There is no refund or discounted rate related to your housing contract.

  2. Remain on campus for the Thanksgiving break and through the end of finals. You will retain normal access to your room until you check out for winter break. At finals, follow in-hall staff's directions to properly prepare your room and check out by the end of finals week, December 12, 2020 at 8 p.m. Make sure you take everything you could need over the winter break because buildings will be completely closed until January. You may contact your community’s Residence Coordinator to request an extension until December 13, 2020 at 12pm; extensions must be submitted by December 11th at 12pm for full consideration.  LSU Dining options will be reduced after Thanksgiving.

  3. Travel for Thanksgiving using mass transit - Remain home. If you travel via mass transit (bus, airplane, train, subway, etc.) during the Thanksgiving break, you should remain home until we reopen for the spring semester in January. Like the university, we hope to reduce the chances of an outbreak of the virus that could be caused by exposure through travel. You do not need to completely move out of your room, but should bring what you’ll need with you as you won’t have access to your space until January 2021. To request an exception to be able to return to campus after using mass transit, email housing@lsu.edu by Nov. 20 for consideration. There is no refund or discounted rate related to your housing contract.

  4. Travel for Thanksgiving using a car - Return to campus.  If you travel by car during Thanksgiving break, you do have the option to return to campus for the remainder of the fall semester.

If you don't reply to the survey or if you indicate travel via mass transit,  access to your residence hall will be removed on Nov. 26 at 10 a.m.

If you opt to remain home until January, you do not need to completely move out of your room when you check out, but should bring what you’ll need with you as you won’t have access to your space until January 2021.

Winter Break - Residence Halls

You are expected to vacate your room within 24 hours of your last exam, or by 8 p.m. on December 12, whichever comes first. You do not need to completely move out of your room when you check out, but should bring what you’ll need with you as you won’t have access to your space until January 2021.

If you have a late final exam or extenuating travel arrangements, you may request an extension to remain in your room until 12 p.m. on Sunday, December 13. E-mail your community’s Residence Coordinator to request an extension by noon on Friday, December 11, 2020.

Your RA will give you specific instructions on how to prep your room for winter break and properly complete a check out appointment (turn in key, thaw out refrigerator, set temperature, remove bedding/mattress toppers, etc.). Check our checklists will also be placed on your room door and on community bulletin boards.

January Check-In for Spring Semester - Residence Halls

Residence halls reopen to all returning students on Saturday, January 9, 2021, at 10 a.m. We will contact you prior to arrival regarding check-in appointments and procedures to keep everyone distanced and safe during COVID-19.

Staff is available to check you in between 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. January 9-11, 2021. Checking in outside of these days and times is allowed, however there will be a wait time.

Your same room assignment is rolled over from the fall semester and is held until 11:59 p.m. on the first day of spring classes. Notify us if you need to arrive later that the first day of classes, otherwise your room assignment and contract will be canceled and you will automatically be charged a spring semester rent penalty in accordance with the housing Academic Year Contract.

May Check-Out for Spring Semester - Residence Halls

You are expected to vacate your room within 24 hours of your last exam.

If you have a late final exam or extenuating travel arrangements, you may request an extension.

Note that after you complete the check out walk through with your RA and approve your room's condition report, a professional staff member will also inspect the room to confirm its condition before entering any charges to your account.

Not Returning to On-Campus Housing

If you are not returning to on-campus housing for the spring semester, you must officially cancel your contract, preferably by December 1, and complete a check out with your community staff:

  • First cancel your contract with Res Life staff in Grace King Hall or at lsu.edu/cancelhousing, then schedule an appointment with your Resident Assistant (RA), remove your belongings, and turn in your keys by Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 8:00 p.m. Failure to schedule a check-out appointment with your RA and/or be present for your check-out may result in additional charges posted to your account.

  • If you cancel your contract after December 12, 2020, you must contact us and arrange a date/time to remove your belongings from your room to avoid penalties.

If you cancel your housing contract for the spring semester, you will automatically be charged a spring semester rent penalty in accordance with the Academic Year Contract. The rent penalty will be included on your spring fee bill and must be paid before your transcripts will be released.

  • The rent penalty can be reversed at the time of cancellation if you are (1) transferring to another university, (2) graduating, or (3) participating in a COOP or exchange program for spring. Proper documentation must be furnished to staff in Grace King Hall at the time you cancel your spring reservation to have the rent penalty reversed at that time.

  • If you cancel your spring housing and are not enrolled at LSU for the spring semester, the rent penalty will be removed from your account after the spring semester’s 14th day of class.

  • Canceling your housing contract for the spring semester due to coursework being online will incur the stated penalties.
