BATON ROUGE –From Feb. 1-3, LSU will host the 2019 Mardi Gras/Alumni Swing Tournament in Coates Hall. The event is sponsored by the LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences and Department of Communication Studies.

Students from more than 15 universities across the country, including LSU’s own Mixon Lycaeum Speech and Debate Team, will gather to engage in public discourse. The Mardi Gras Classic/Alumni Swing will offer many different types of public speaking activities, including collegiate debate. This free campus event is an opportunity for community engagement and enlargement in an interactive space.

The Mixon Lycaeum Speech and Debate Team boasts a proud tradition of cutting edge performances, elite debate and professional development within the world of intercollegiate competitive forensics. The team competes in both individual events and multiple forms of debate. In debate, LSU fields competitors in both International Public Debate and National Parliamentary Debate. Students have also garnered regional and national attention with competitive performances and speeches in all 11 American Forensics Association Individual Events. These events include the oral interpretation of literature, memorized public address, and limited preparation speeches. The team competes in the 6th District of the American Forensics Association, which includes schools such as the University of Alabama, Ole Miss and the University of Florida.
