I really love getting to connect with students. The relationships I build with them and getting the opportunity to support their journey is what sustains me when it comes to this work. I can literally feel my energy increase when I get to be in a room with them.

I also strive to show up for students everyday the way that a mentor showed up for me in undergrad– I struggled with homesickness and nearly flunked out of college by first year. I realized that summer that there was no opportunity for me back home. By that point, I had done so poorly academically that I needed one of my professors to change a grade for me to return the next semester. I reached out to the late Dr. Olive Hilliard, my Comp II professor, and explained my situation though tears and sadness. She asked me why I wanted to go to college. I explained my circumstances and outlined what little opportunity I felt I had outside of returning college. After a firm talking to about what my priorities should be, she asked me to write a paper detailing what I had shared. She updated my grade to reflect the submission of the paper, which gave me a GPA high enough to continue my education. Dr. Hilliard was the only black faculty member I ever had while at UCA. I didn’t understand the value in that right away. While I had one of the best college experiences any person could hope for at UCA, she believed in me and supported me in ways that no other faculty member had ever done. I credit my being here today to her willingness to give me a second chance.

Favorite chapter memory

My line sisters and I had a sleepover during our intake process and one of them thought she knew that chapter stroll. We spent all night learning it only to find out it was completely wrong. Although we were so embarrassed when we showed our big sisters, that time together was the foundation of our bound as sisters.

What I want to share about Greek Life

I think a lot of people view Greek Life as a high risk community. I want them to know that the goodness always outweighs the bad. There are so many amazing moments and beautiful people in this community.
