McLindon to authorize the School of Environmental Design’s Construction Technology curriculum, effective in September of that same year.

In 1972, the first graduates of the program, 27 in all, earned their Bachelor of Science in Construction Technology.

Fifty years later, a number of those graduates were in attendance as what has now become the Bert. S. Turner Department of Construction Management celebrated its golden anniversary with a banquet on Thursday, Sept. 26 at The Estuary at the Water Campus.

Speakers included LSU President F. King Alexander, LSU Executive Vice President and Provost Stacia Haynie, LSU College of Engineering Dean Judy Wornat, LSU Vice Provost of Digital and Continuing Education Sasha Thackaberry, and Chair of the Bert S. Turner Department of Construction Management Chuck Berryman.

Following the first graduating class, in 1976, the program became known as the Department of Construction and moved from the School of Environmental Design to the General College. In 1995, the Department of Construction was renamed the Department of Construction Management, and in 1996, a construction management review committee recommended the department be moved to the College of Engineering. Today, the department has four federal research centers and one OSHA Training Institute. Additionally, by the end of Fall 2019, it will have 11 programs—both on-campus and online.
