The LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital Ophthalmology Service provides referral appointments and full-time referral emergency services for animals with eye diseases and injuries.
Each patient presented to the Ophthalmology Service is seen by a veterinary ophthalmologist. Residents, interns, and veterinary students participate in the evaluation of each animal as part of the curriculum in the School of Veterinary Medicine. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital strives to always provide the latest in veterinary patient care, diagnostics, and treatment, but patients are never enrolled in clinical trials or experiments without the request and explicit permission of the owners.
New patient examinations for dogs and cats are scheduled on Mondays and Thursdays. Large animal appointments are scheduled on Tuesdays in cooperation with the Equine Medicine and Food Animal Services. Exotic species are seen on Mondays and Thursdays in cooperation with the Bird, Zoo, and Exotic Medicine Service. Orthopedic Foundation for Animals CAER exams (http://www.offa.org/eye_evaluation.html) are offered monthly and Equine Eye Registry Foundation exams (http://www.vmdb.org/horse_index.html) are available by appointment. Emergency referrals are received as needed following direct communication from the referring veterinarian. Surgical appointments are scheduled on Mondays or Tuesdays following a preliminary examination of the patient and consultation with the owner. Overnight stays are anticipated for most surgical patients.
In addition to the diagnosis and medical treatment of eye diseases, the Ophthalmology Service provides advanced surgical services including eyelid surgeries, corneal reconstructive surgeries, corneal transplants, cataract and lens removal/replacement surgeries, glaucoma shunt placement, vitrectomy, retinal reattachment, lachrymal surgeries, and orbital exploratory surgeries.
