APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES – October 21, 2015, Staff Senate Meetings
A motion to accept the minutes was made by Senator Jon DeRoche. The motion, seconded by Senator M.E. Hart, carried.
President Millican introduced Kenneth Miles, the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Executive Director of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student Athletes. Dr. Miles lives his life according to the motto “be a man for others” and has a commitment to what he terms the “well rounded” student-athlete, originating from his time as a four year letterman at the University of Virginia. While he was there, he strove to be a positive influence, both to his teammates and the Charlottesville community, through his work mentoring youth in the Big Brother program and the Adopt-A-Grandparent program.
Kenneth Miles arrived at Syracuse University in 1997 as the Director for Academic Support, and under his academic direction the Syracuse football program notched a perfect 100 percent graduation rate in 2000, leading the nation, and earning the American Football Coaches Association Achievement Award. Dr. Miles later served as Assistant Dean for Student Services and Executive Director for Diversity Enrollment Management and Graduate Admissions at Syracuse University, and during that time, he created the Kenneth O. Miles Scholarship through the “Our Time Has Come” initiative, to assist students of color cover the costs of a college education.
Dr. Miles returned to the Syracuse Athletics Department as the Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Support Service in 2006, where his efforts and accomplishments in that department have been highly recognized by many different organizations. In 2008, Dr. Miles joined the LSU family as the Executive Director of the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes, helping the Center to maintain certification from the prestigious College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Since his arrival, he has created a formal media training program, designed a media studio, implemented a digital signage plan, and upgraded the main computer lab. He also created the Student Learning Center, developed advisory boards for Professional/Career Development, Student Learning, Health & Wellness and Diversity, Institution and Civic Engagement, generated a 5 year strategic plan, renovated the Life Skills office, guided an instrumental overhaul of the center’s website, renovated the tutorial center, and, having once been an art instructor himself, even partnered with the School of Art to house a permanent art exhibit entitled, “Thirty Years of LSU Printmaking.”
In May 2012, Kenneth was named the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs in addition to his Executive Director position with the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes. The overall LSU graduation success rate for student athletes, particularly the football team, has soared since he arrived at LSU. In the words of Staff Senate President Tammy Millican, it takes two “Miles” to have a successful football team.
Kenneth Miles thanked the Senate and expressed appreciation for his wonderful introduction. He then proceeded to give the Staff Senate a description of the recruitment experience, as the prospective athletes experience it, when they arrive at the Cox Communication Center for Student Athletes. From the words of Walt Holliday, Director of Academic Center for Student Athletes, “it’s a 54,000 square feet of building designed to get your mind right.” You enter to learn, you leave to serve. Every time you come into the Center, is an opportunity to get better. You come in that morning and do your tasks, you leave better than when you came, every single time. These are things that are not necessarily an obligatory response, but become something that are implemented, mandated and expected from the student athletes. The reality is that it does take a village to raise a successful student athlete. So the success that we’ve had is not necessarily from “Kenneth Miles”, it is all the people in the athletics building; it’s the coaches, it’s the Athletic Administrators, it’s the Advisors working within the colleges, it’s a host of individuals that are working for their success. When we talk about the success of our student athletes, please understand that it is from all of our efforts.
81% is the graduation success rate of LSU student athletes in 2014 and in 2013, consecutively. In 2008, when Dr. Miles came to LSU, the graduation success rate was 69%, and most recently, within the last two weeks, the graduation success rate of LSU student athletes was indicated to be now at 84%. This did not happen accidentally but by design. Dr. Miles went on to explain that his unit is literally assessing everything: programs, personnel and other critical factors to ensure LSU’s optimal success. The vision of his unit is to be that premier resource for student athletes. The Cox Center for Student Athletes is a resource, to be used as a transformative process for students; they come in as young men and women and they leave as men and women. That is the expectation, the culture that is being creating there. The unit’s vision is to help them maintain a balance between academic success and personal development.
Dr. Miles went on to discuss the foundation, values and intangibles of the Cox Center for Student Athletes, which include the concepts of team work, diversity, success, education, accountability and service. The goal of the Center is to graduate LSU’s student athletes and prepare them with career planning, ensuring that by the time they leave, all the experience, resume and cover letter writing, LinkedIn Profiles, mock interviews, media training, public speaking, and media etiquette they understand the image of what it means to be an LSU Scholar Athlete. Dr. Miles also stressed the additional aims of promoting integrity, relationships, and professional development; equipping ourselves with the skills and confidence to help our student athletes.
Dr. Miles shared answers to common questions he’s asked with regard to our student athletes and the degree completion rate. For our student athletes who leave college early to commence a professional career, LSU assists with their return to the University at a later time by having conversations prior to the athletes’ departure, confirming the student is in good academic standing, and offering full tuition assistance upon their return. And at the end of the day, it’s difficult for an athlete to pass up an opportunity to earn millions of dollars playing the sport they love. That’s a reality, and we understand and support this. However, at the Cox Center for Student Athletes, Dr. Miles is preparing our gifted student athletes to also recognize that professional careers do not often have a lengthy duration, and their LSU education is a plan of action to be completed, once that career has ended.
Miles spoke about the Bengal Belles Academic Achievement Award which is given to those student athletes who are enrolled in graduate school with a 3.0 or higher prior to exhausting their athletic eligibility. What’s interesting about that is students can be in graduate school and still compete. The Center always encourages our athletes to maximize use of scholarships to graduate on time or earlier, and even progress to graduate studies, if possible. For example, with many of our football athletes leaving the University prior to degree completion, the Center helps plan a 3.5 year matriculation plan, so the student knows precisely what classes are required upon their return, should they opt to for the draft. University policies such as residency and retention of catalog year are anticipated and advised within the context of this plan for the athlete as well.
The other question that Dr. Miles frequently receives is with regard to technology. Technology tends to be one of the two tools the Center uses as an educational guide. LSU is one of two schools to actually do this, according to Apple, as we use preloaded applications (app) on the IPad to be able to assist students in the classroom. Everything is intentional and by design. It’s not enough to say, here’s a tool go use it. The Center staff trains the student on what the app does, how it can help them in the classroom, to ensure success in the class.
Dr. Miles noted the growth in personnel, beginning with three learning specialist and now having seven; the most in the country. Evidence indicated student success is always linked to minimizing the ratio of students to advisors. All of these changes have been made with the intention of teaching our athletes to become autonomous people.
The floor was then opened for questions.
Q: What do you see for the future for student athletes?
A: Miles sees pros/cons for the future. He views the changes in the delivery of teaching methods as a challenge for athletes and all students. Online classes have a way of making someone think that they’ve got free time. And so they don’t put forth the effort that is needed in those classes in order to be successful. When you think about a student athlete who is regulated by 20 hours per week, who can take as many online classes as the non-student, where are they going to spend a majority of their time? Another challenge he sees is the fact that while sports generate, in some cases, millions of dollars, some supplies and such are not covered by scholarships and grants, and are instead paid out of the student’s pocket. Due to their commitment to their sport and academics many may not be able to go out and work to cover expenses.
Q: How do you weigh in on paying student athletes?
A: Dr. Miles’ personal opinion suggests that we look at it the pay-for-play notion like a scholarship. Much like most scholarships, you have to be in good standing to receive it, which gives the student the incentive to stay in good academic standing. He thinks that everything that is earned for coaches and student athletes should be somewhat respective. What is the benefit for the people that are actually making this happen?
Q: What are the key characters that student athletes need, to be set up for success prior to coming here, and then can you share some stats as it is broken down by team, as some programs seem to have more strenuous requirements of the student athlete, whereas others are not as long of a program, like basketball which is year round?
A: Dr. Miles mentioned that when he thinks about key things needed for success which are noted according to research, the likelihood of persisting are familiar upbringing, high school preparation, social capital and culture capital. For instance looking at the educational rankings for the State of Louisiana, we are 48th including the district. The interesting thing about that is from a political policy aspect, we are graded a B+, but from the actual implementation of our policies, we are graded a D-, so what works in theory does not work in practice. Certain seasons do make it difficult, as some sports spend more time on the road than in the classroom, but all students must be treated equally. So to the Center builds a support structure to help them. Advisors travel with teams, students work with learning specialists to know what assignments need to be done while they are traveling, students can actually log into the Cox Center to join a live tutoring session as well, and they try to utilize all the technology they can, leveraging the ways they can learn and keep up-to-date. In addition to these tools, the Center has increased the number of smart boards in their office, created learning games, which plays upon the athletes’ competitive natures.
Q: Has a trust been discussed instead of a student athlete being paid?
A: Some discussions have happened with the NCAA, to put money aside but then the question arises, what are the stipulations in order for them to receive money that they have already earned? Does having a degree equate to that? Do you put a number of years that someone has to stay? Do they have to be in good academic standing? There are programs that deal with a number of things that teach them about giving back to institutions through stewardship and donorship. Others teach the basics of financing, understanding an expense report with revenues and expenses, some others are teaching about investments.
Q: How do we better integrate our student athletes with the mainstream of the rest of the student body?
A: Dr. Miles mentioned by choice, student athletes do not intermingle with the rest of the University. The Academic Center utilizes its relationships with the various departments across the university to get our athletes better integrated. Student athletes are on a pretty tight schedule as well. Due to some of the restraints of the discipline, it can make participating in the usual parts of campus life difficult.
President Millican reported that on October 23, there was a Board of Supervisors meeting where Past-President Julie Perkins attended. Perkins reported that she attended the morning session as these meetings typically are held all day. The highlights included a presentation on the “Leveraging of LSU’s Resources Through Strategic Partnerships” that focused on the transition of the Law School into the main campus, as well as some of the partnerships with Pennington Biomedical Center and the Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, to make sure that we continue to maximizing those opportunities and work together as One LSU. The online link was included in the report for further review. There is going to be a .2 to 2% fee increase implemented for students that will be dedicated to increase security on campus as well as increase mental health services for students on campus which Student Government supported. There was also a presentation on commercialization on research and what is coming out of the LIFT Funds. Some of the athletic revenue will be dedicated to renovating and expanding the football operations center along with Tiger Athletic Foundation. Also, the AgCenter is trying to create a USDA licensed veterinary biologic facility which will allow for two opportunities, it will create revenue for the space leased and we will also receive some of the revenue generated. One of the personnel actions that was significant was to approve President Alexander’s contract extension through June 2020.
President Millican stated that on November 3, the Executive Committee began interviewing candidates for the Provost and Executive Vice President position. The Executive Committee, along with the Faculty Senate Executive Committee has met with Michelle Wheatly with the West Virginia University and was able to ask her some questions. She is an impressive candidate.
President Millican reported that on November 4, she and Secretary Barbara Reonas attended the APIC Committee Meeting which will be discussed later in the meeting. Millican also met with Faculty Senator, Gundela Hachmann, to discuss the situation with the LSU Child Care Center which will also be discussed later during the meeting.
President Millican reported that on November 4, the Executive Committee interviewed Interim Provost Rick Koubek for the Provost and Executive Vice President position.
President Millican shared that on November 10, she and President-Elect Trey Truitt attended a breakfast and conversation with President Alexander. Items of discussion included looking at the budget situation, many of LSU’s successes and some ways that we can help, which she will send to the full Senate. The Executive Committee also interviewed John Valery White from Las Vegas, Nevada for the Provost and Executive Vice President position. After that meeting, the Executive Committee met to plan for today’s meeting and set the agenda.
President Millican stated that on November 11, she had the pleasure of meeting with Student Government and NBBJ who is the firm doing the Campus Master Plan. They are developing a scope, so we had an opportunity to sit down with them to discuss some of the things to be included. They brought some wonderful ideas.
On November 12, the New Staff Reception was held, and went very well. Some of the groups who may not have been able to attend in the past are now being allowed to attend, as Staff Senate is being looked at as a legitimate organization on campus. The Executive Committee also interviewed John Murray Gibson with Northwestern University for the Provost and Executive Vice President position.
President Millican reported that on November 16, she attended the University Council on Gender Equity Meeting. She will discuss her findings later during the meeting today as well.

Staff Benefits, Policies and Development
Senator Godfrey reported that the Committee met on November 4. She thanked everyone who helped with the New Staff Reception held on November 12, at the BEC Rotunda. If anyone has any feedback, please submit this to the committee, as they will meet next week for discussion. Senator Aaron Cherry has been working on posting the PS-12 which outlines leave policies on Google Docs for all to review and provide feedback on the document. This will help provide an online dialogue for other groups on campus and with Human Resource Management.
Budget & Finance
President Millican announced that there will be a change, as Treasurer Michelle Lowery has quite a few commitments on campus, and Millican has agreed to chair this committee. She will send out a meeting notice soon to convene.
Senator Lopez reported that the Committee is waiting for the final elections to happen, being mindful of announcements of a special session that could happen. Once that has been announced, the committee will plan an event to come to the Capital.
President Millican announced that LSU has been working with the transition team for the new Governor which will be housed in Kirby Smith. We will take good care of them, which may help with planning an LSU Day at the Legislature.
Long Range Review and Planning
Senator Steib reported that the committee met on October 19, and Dr. Dereck Rovaris gave the committee an update on the Campus Climate Survey, which is scheduled to launch in the spring. This survey will obtain a lot of information to help the University as we look both at our Strategic Plan and other initiatives on campus, to address identified gaps and opportunities. For the rest of this semester, the committee will be reviewing the Strategic Plan to see which goals and objectives have been met and doing some reprioritization as we move into the spring.
SPECIAL AD-HOC COMMITTEES
President Millican requested committee updates be provided.
Holiday on Campus
President Millican thanked everyone who brought candy to donate for the children’s goody bags to be handed out at the Holiday on Campus event. Senator Gomez reported that the committee met on November 10, and she wanted to thank everyone on the committee who is doing a “rock star job” with coordinating the event. She is really proud of the work that everyone is doing. She announced that Holiday on Campus will be held on Tuesday, December 1, from 6 -8pm in the LSU Student Union. She also announced that Senator Jennifer Springstead has signed up over 127 volunteers for the event. Everything is confirmed and we also have some nice new costumes, thanks to President Millican’s husband’s employer, who donated a Reindeer Costume and a Present costume. The candy that has been donated will be filled by, or at, the next committee meeting to be held on November 24. The marketing for the event has gone out, thanks to Senator Jacquelyn Craddock who worked on that. If you see the announcements on Facebook, please share it to help get the word out, either on your personal page or through your department. We are looking forward to a wonderful event. Millican indicated that she sent a broadcast request to Strategic Communications for all of the Staff Senate sponsored holiday events which should go out today. She encouraged everyone to post in their units.
President-Elect Truitt reported that the last committee meeting was cancelled. However, we are moving forward with the apparel project. The committee chose four different types of apparel for purchase and have samples for everyone who is interested to view and try on if needed before ordering. The samples will be in his office if you would like to drop by. We have the long sleeve, short sleeve polo style shirts and a vest option. He can circulate the sign-up sheet for those senators who shared an interest in purchasing, to make sure that it is accurate for sizes. Hopefully, we can get these items ordered before the New Year. He also announced, in partnership with the Holiday on Campus Committee, we ordered a promotional item which is purple tiger paw chip clip with the LSU Staff Senate’s logo and website. Each family who attends the Holiday on Campus event will receive one and this item can be used throughout the year at events as a new initiative, including Human Resource Management giving one to every new employee who is hired at LSU, along with our other materials, to help them become familiar with the LSU Staff Senate.
Senator Hart reported that the Committee met on November 6, and set the dates for the Holiday Decorating Contest and the Candy Grams, which will be included in President Millican’s Broadcast email and will also be posted on the website and social media. The theme is LSU Winter Wonderland for the decorating contest. President Millican encouraged Senators to consider helping with the assembly of the candy grams. We had over 400 candy grams during the last effort.
President Millican asked that liaison committee updates be provided.
Administrative Process Improvement
President Millican reported that the committee met and commented that this has been a very active committee since it started. Senator Reonas then summarized the committee’s activities this month, with former Senator Donna Torres coming to address concerns about travel and the procurement system. As of November 1, LSU has been relieved of PPM 49, and with that, we have a memorandum of understanding with the Division of Administration that will allow us autonomy in administering our travel. They are going to partner with LSU on the RFP’s for travel and LaCarte. They are going to carve out a portion for LSU and share the annual rebate on the procurement card. Veterinary Medicine will receive a portion of the rebate and the rest is going to be divided among different departments. We have to keep Shorts Travel and Bank of America until that contract comes back up and we will be keeping the same meal and lodging per diems at this time. We will also have to audit our own travel. Also, effective July 1, there are some things that will change with travel. You can now purchase preferred seats and they are going to put the approval to travel into the hands of your supervisors or whomever is fiscally responsible in your unit, which will make it easier to be approved. Each unit will be able to establish their travel policies. You can get GPS in rental cars now which will be approved. Also, the 99 mile limitation is no longer effective. They are willing to come to units and give training on travel if needed. She encouraged everyone to share with their colleagues and if you have an issue, please send a quick email to Donna Torres as soon as it happens, so a log can be created of all the issues that has happened which will help when renewing the contract. The website is also active for complaints or feedback. Senators were encouraged to submit any concerns or feedback via the website, in an effort to help resolve issues. Also, a frequently asked questions section is being developed for the website, and Senators were asked to specifically generate questions related to travel FAQ’s or Guidelines for the infrequent traveler, to be included.
Black Faculty & Staff Caucus
Senator Dominic Adedeji announced that the meeting will be held tomorrow.
Senator Jon DeRoche announced that the meeting will be held tomorrow.
Campus Committee on Sustainability
President Millican reported that the first committee meeting was held on November 5. There is a variety of representation from academic, auxiliary and administration from across campus. We have begun breaking up into subcommittees to assign members to energy efficiency, recycling and other topics. More information to come as this reestablished committee gets going.
Senator Hendricks announced that the meeting will be held tomorrow.
Council of Staff Advisors
Past-President Perkins reported that the council met on October 22. Unfortunately we had extreme technical difficulties as we teleconference with the other campuses within the system. We will meet again on December 11 and use conference call instead of video conferencing. We are scheduled to meet with Board of Supervisors Chairman Board of Supervisors Chairman Ray Lasseigne and Chair-Elect Scott Ballard.

Diversity Action Team
Senator Godfrey announced the next meeting is scheduled on November 20, 2015 at noon.
Facilities Design & Development
President Millican announced that at the November 12 meeting, the committee met with NBBJ regarding the scope of the Campus Master Plan.
Secretary Barbara Reonas reported that the Faculty Senate meeting was held on November 9, President Cope spoke about the Daily Reveille print version that they would like to see continue.
He also spoke about long queues at the Center for Testing and Evaluation coming to light and now being studied by the Office of the Provost, LSU’s proposed outsourcing of data storage and quality concerns, the search for Linda Bonin’s replacement in the Office of Strategic Communication, and several other updates. There were also presentations from Brandon Smith regarding the United Way and Kenneth Miles gave a similar presentation that we heard today. Carol O’Neil, who is the Director of LSU Discover, gave a presentation on the workshop series and spoke about LSU Discover Day which will be held on April 7, 2016. There was also a presentation by Senator Gundela Hachmann regarding the LSU Child Care Center and the potential private partnership. Also Gabrielle Triche who is the Academic Affairs Chair with Student Government gave a presentation on students developing an Honor Code for themselves perhaps calling it the Tiger Creed or LSU Commitment to Honor and would basically be an affirmation of students against cheating and plagiarism, etc. There were also first readings of three resolutions which were included in the meeting packet.
Food Pantry Oversight
Senator Godfrey announced that she spoke with Jennie Stewart who said they are in need right now as we go into the holiday season. She encouraged departments to hold a Thanksgiving collection drive for canned meat, cereal, powdered milk, canned fruit and macaroni and cheese before next Wednesday for those students in need, or for those who may not have food service during the Thanksgiving Holiday.

University Council on Gender Equity
President Millican shared that one of the areas of focus this year is the wage gap. She invited everyone to attend a Holiday Forum called, Closing the Gaps, Women and Minorities in Leadership, A Panel Discussion on December 9, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Journalism Building. Light refreshments will be provided. They are looking to see what peer institutions are doing about this. Millican and two other committee members have been tasked with wage gap education, which will look at different ways to educate students, staff and faculty about that wage gap, its causes and common myths. There is another subcommittee working on Women in Leadership. She will forward the invitation to the full Senate. There will also be Women of Color Leadership Panel scheduled in February.
University High Risk Travel
There is nothing to report. There are maybe one or two a month sent for review.
University Planning Council
There is not anything further to report with regards to the information included in the President’s Report.
Staff Senate Gift Fund (Reminder to Please Contribute at the Meeting)
President Millican encouraged senators to contribute to the Gift Fund. Voluntary contributions are $10 per year, per senator.
The guidelines for giving are:
· Death - send flowers ($50) upon death of a current senator or former senator, and for current senator’s immediate family members.
· Wedding - appropriate gift, cost not to exceed $30 (current senators).
· Babies - send flowers or gift - $30 (current senators).
· Retirement – send an acknowledgement for current senators as well as former senators.
Please make checks payable to LSU and memo the Staff Senate Gift Fund.
Senator Name Tags
President Millican announced that the name tags have been approved and ordered.
New Staff Reception
President Millican thanked the Staff Benefits, Policies and Development Committee Members for doing a fantastic job with planning the New Staff Reception. Everything went smoothly and everyone who attended really enjoyed it.
President Millican announced that she received an email from Ryan Landry for Staff Senate feedback with regards to Policy Statement 39 which is the performance evaluations for classified, unclassified and other academic employees. LSU is proposing a combined staff performance management policy which has been drafted. She will forward the draft to the full Senate for any feedback, suggestions or comments. She would like to compile and send to Ryan Landry by Friday so they can take into account as they work to begin changing how this policy statement is set up.
LSU Child Care Center
President Millican announced that she sent an email to the full Senate explaining what is currently going on with the Child Care Center. Senator Ramon Lopez has attended the first meeting that was held this week and he will give us an update.
Senator Lopez reported that on October 26, 2015, it was first identified that the LSU Child Care Center was in plans for privatization, having been announced by Auxiliary Services and Finance and Administration in a CCC parent meeting. During that time, Faculty Senate and Staff Senate raised questions about the process and also requested representation on the committee discussing this. He and Faculty Senator Gundela Hachman were requested by President Millican to be included on the committee through Vice President Dan Layzell. A Student Government representative has also been invited to serve. Up to that point, there was no review committee formed. Through some additional communication, they were able to get the College of Human Sciences and Education as well as Health Center involved. The first committee meeting was held November 16, 2015 which went well. Up to that point, the committee’s role was not really established. Originally it was supposed to be just a review of the Solicitation for Offers (SFO) proposals when they came in, but thanks to this meeting, not only is Finance and Administration in conversations with the College of Education, so the College of Human Sciences and Education is potentially looking at taking over the administration of the Child Care Center. They will find out the result of those conversations sometime in December. At that point, if they do decide to go with an SFO, he will have to sign a confidentiality agreement and will not be able to discuss further. He thanked the Staff Senate Executive Committee for their support on this. The Child Care Center has been very important on campus since 2004, which Staff Senate helped create. He thanked Senator Summer Steib on her reporting from 2012 on the Child Care needs at LSU which really helped when working with administration. He also thanked Faculty Senator Gundela Hachman who took the initiative with calling different universities that were listed as examples and speaking with their Human Resource Director to get very detailed information to bring to the committee. This has been a great partnership with Faculty Senate.
Q: Is Senator Lopez’s role on the committee as a parent or LSU Staff Senator?
A: When President Millican made the request with Dan Layzell, he stipulated that it be a parent as well as a Senator. Senator Lopez mentioned that his primary role will be to look at the needs of the employees on campus as a Staff Senator. He also requested that a representative from the Parent Advisory Committee be included but unfortunately was told no.
Q: Did they say why a parent representative would not be included.
A: Not specifically.
President Millican asked that if anyone is, or was, a parent of a child who attended the Child Care Center, please send any issues that you had, or that would be helpful, to Senator Lopez, who can bring that information to the committee anonymously.

Treasurer Lowery circulated an updated balance sheet for the Staff Senate accounts. She reported that:

President Millican sent out a request from Student Government regarding care packages being put together for our soldiers who are currently serving. She has charged the Staff Senate with gathering items for three packages. She will send everyone the list of items and if you would like to contribute, please bring those items to her or Melonie Milton at the Staff Senate Office. We have to get these items to Student Government by next Wednesday. This is a wonderful and worthy thing to do for our soldiers as Staff Senate.
President Millican shared that Senator Ramon Lopez was featured in an article for his work to help non-traditional students feel welcome and comfortable at LSU.
President Millican wanted to congratulate Brian Ainsworth for being named the 2015 Sales and Marketer of the year. A well-deserved honor for someone who always gives of himself and leads his statewide business development team through coaching and building relationships. Campus Federal is lucky to have him a part of the team! Way to go Brian!
Staff Senator Birthdays
President Millican announced that Senator Aaron Cherry celebrated his birthday on November 7. “Happy Birthday.”
Dr. Dereck Rovaris would like to announce a response or statement that he has issued with regard to the situation that has happened at the University of Missouri.
As an institution we are far from perfect when it comes to the myriad of diversity issues. However we are so far ahead of the many recent concerns being raised by students across the country. There are demands for cultural centers, race and gender studies, open dialogue with administration, representation at homecoming, and even chief diversity officers! We are doing all of these things and so much more. Last night our chief diversity officer along with several administrators met until 9:30pm with a slightly diverse group of about 120 concerned students, to participate in small group discussions on race. An enlightened evening showcased our ability to have open dialogue, especially since the administrators did most of the listening. Last week a similar discussion took place, and later this week Dr. Alexander will have breakfast with a group of diverse student leaders to further engage our community.
The past two years our student body has elected students from diverse backgrounds for homecoming king and queen: including black students, a Vietnamese student, and a student with a disability who is also an international student from the South Sudan. They are all wonderful people, chosen by their peers. Our nearly new Women's Center and African American Cultural Center are bursting at the seams and often inadequate to accommodate the various groups that utilize these facilities. Our African and African American Studies program and our Women and Gender studies program have both seen steady enrollment in many of their course offerings. We also took a major step forward by introducing an LGBT minor last fall.
These are but a few of the things that we do, and we do well. There are certainly more diverse issues that we already address that we find many students still clamoring for at other campuses. Yet, we've "still got many miles to go before we sleep". From confederate flags, buildings named after segregationists and slavers, homophobic displays and retorts, underrepresented diversity of our faculty and administration, the list could go on. There remains much work to be done. We must continue our efforts to support diversity in all of its richness here at LSU. Some of our sister institutions are being harshly reminded to do the same. Our built-in advantage is our already existing commitment to diversity and our ongoing open relationship with our most important constituents, our students. Diversity is good for everyone.
This is how we feel about diversity here at LSU. We are not perfect but we are doing a good job. President Alexander sent out a similar broadcast message to everyone.
President Millican announced that the Center for Academic Success is proud to announce its recent certification as a national Learning Center of Excellence. The CAS is one of only two learning centers in the nation to ever receive this prestigious honor awarded to those who surpass the highest standards. The CAS has been helping students achieve academic success for over 25 years through services such as tutoring, supplemental instruction and learning strategies. The center serves all LSU students and receives over 70,000 visits each year. Thank you to the Shell Oil Company, campus partners, CAS tutors, SI leaders, and staff for their dedication to helping LSU students achieve their dreams.
