PRSSA at LSU partners to donate 5,000 meals to the LSU Food Pantry

Public Relations Student Society of America at LSU and local company The Cajun Spoon partnered to donate 50 cases of dry mix Cajun products to the LSU Food Pantry on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, in the LSU Student Union.

PRSSA at LSU and The Cajun Spoon began their partnership with a social media and event planning competition in October, when teams of public relations students created ideas and proposed suggestions to assist the Cajun food company with its rebranding efforts.

“We were excited to continue working with PRSSA [at LSU] by donating food to the food pantry, which provides assistance to so many students,” The Cajun Spoon CEO Ryan Grizzaffi stated.

The LSU Food Pantry opened in 2013 to offer support to LSU students who were experiencing hunger and food insecurity, according to Campus Life’s Assistant Director of Service Josh Dean.

“In Fall 2016, the pantry was used 1,606 times by 474 students,” Dean stated. During that semester, students utilized the pantry an average of 97 times per week.

The Cajun Spoon’s donation has helped stock the shelves of the LSU Food Pantry for its return to regular semester hours on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2016.

“PRSSA at LSU is extremely grateful for The Cajun Spoon’s donation,” PRSSA at LSU’s Vice President Hailey Johnson stated. “Ryan is so passionate about giving back to the community and spreading cheer. It has been such a great experience working with him.”

Service is a core value of PRSSA at LSU. Last year, members of the organization volunteered at LSU’s Geaux BIG Baton Rouge, a large-scale day of service. In addition, members sorted donations at the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

“We encourage our members to become engaged in their communities,” PRSSA at LSU’s Public Relations Director Kaelen Delaune stated. “We hope to continue coordinating donations, and we plan to continue serving the LSU community in any way that we can.”
