Redesigned I-20 in effect June 29

As a result of new release of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database, the I-20 Certificate of Eligibility will have a new look.  Any I-20s produced after the June 26, 2015, release and upgrade will be in the newly designed format.

Students are not required to receive the new version of the I-20 immediately since the current/older version of the I-20 will continue to be accepted by all U.S. government agencies through next year.  All F-1 students and their F-2 dependents will be required to have a redesigned I-20 form by July 1, 2016.

Part of the June 26 SEVIS upgrade includes a conversion of students' and dependents' names to a new standard.  International Services will contact those students whose names have changed on their I-20s as a result of this upgrade so that those students/dependents can receive an updated I-20 soon after the SEVIS enhancements have gone into effect.

The name standards help SEVIS users:

  • Comply with the standards governing machine-readable passports.
  • Convert foreign names into standardized formats.
  • Get better results when searching for names in U.S. government systems.
  • Improve the accuracy of name matching with other U.S. government systems.
  • Prevent the unacceptable entry of characters found in some names.

Some U.S. government agencies are encouraging students (and/or their dependents) to receive the new version of the I-20 after the June 26 upgrade has gone into effect if they will be applying for:

  1. a U.S. Social Security Number.
  2. a driver's license or state ID card.

Students and dependents can still use the current/older version of the I-20 form when applying for these services.  However, to avoid delays in these applications, the agencies recommend students and dependents receive the new version of the I-20 before applying for these services.
